Hypnotherapy: Journeys of the Soul
Hypnotherapy: Journeys of the Soul
Applying hypnotic techniques as old as the Pharaohs, common in tribal rituals, and validated as a therapeutic tool by the American Medical Association in 1958, I help clients address mental, emotional, and physical problems by guiding them on journeys to reveal memories associated with the feelings, images, words, and sensations associated with their symptoms.
Predicated on an interconnected view of the Universe which, to quote Max Planck, the founding father of quantum physics, holds that consciousness is “fundamental” and that matter is “derivative from consciousness,” I practice classical transpersonal hypnotherapy which addresses the body, the mind - and the spirit, or the soul - as an interlinking triad imbued with negative and positive energies from past experiences.
Either online or in-person, I facilitate my client’s healing journey by memory regression. I enable their conscious mind to step aside and assume little more than observer status. This allows memories in the subconscious mind to surface. All our experiences are recorded there, however trivial, however traumatic, however joyful, however painful.
Within these memories reside the origins and the causes of our behaviors, our traits, and our symptoms. Whether to amplify the positive memories or to neutralize the negative ones, I help my clients to relive the experiences they need to grow, to heal, to evolve.
The client’s subconscious knows what they need, and when. They are the authors of their own healing: they have only to trust in their ability to do so.
I guide the client through the events in their memories, directing them to expand on the details and to focus on their associated emotions, thoughts, and physical feelings. This often brings about a powerful, cleansing, and profoundly uplifting, even ecstatic experience - a cathartic release accompanied by transformative cognitive insight and subsequently relief of symptoms.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle used the term catharsis to describe an audience’s release of emotional tension while watching dramatic tragedy. He recognized its beneficial mental impact as well. We can experience a similar effect from art, sculpture, music, and literature.
When we are not the audience but the actor in our own story, the release is all the stronger, its therapeutic impact all the greater.
I adopt a client-centered approach in which it is the client who does all the work - because it is the client who has all the answers.
The client reveals, the client relives, the client releases.
Likewise, it is the client who resolves their problem. With release there often comes resolution of their mental, emotional, and physical symptoms, allowing them to move forward, evolve, and realize their fullest life potential.
Hypnotherapy is potent. Sometimes, resolution occurs in just one or two therapeutic sessions. In complicated cases, especially when the client is still gathering the courage to explore a particular path on the journey, it may take several.
But all we have to do is trust.
Using hypnosis to arrive at an altered state of consciousness that allows you to surface hidden memories, I enable you to tap into the sources of your talents and your positive character traits and behaviors.
Your positive themes - whether musical, intellectual and athletic skills, self-confidence, creativity, honesty, loyalty, or any other you choose to explore - are expanded and reinforced by exploring their appearance in your past.
The encouragement, sense of accomplishment, recognition or success thereby experienced serves to amplify, empower, and embolden you on your journey.
As your guide, I am your student, and privileged to grow with you.
Creating a safe energetic space and inducing a state of deep relaxation, I help you become receptive to memories which materialize from your subconscious to assist you in neutralizing negative themes that are troubling you.
You may be suffering from feelings of fear, grief, guilt, shame, or inadequacy - such as unworthiness, rejection, confusion, or betrayal - lacking in a specific skill set, or struggling with addiction or phobias such as irrational fears of heights and enclosed spaces.
Recalling, reliving, and releasing the underlying events for these conditions is an extraordinarily effective path to their resolution. Again, as your guide, I am your student. I am humbled by your healing and privileged to grow with you.
The death of our 12-year-old son Oliver in 2015, one week after the onset of headaches and 36 hours after he was diagnosed with leukemia, prompted in me a profound search for knowledge as I wrestled to make sense of human lives, our purpose, and the nature of the Universe.
These were questions that had, in fact, mattered deeply to me in my teenage years, when I had passed an exam in “Divinity” (studying the biblical Gospels); sought to experience God in the Episcopalian/Anglican Church (I did not succeed) at what is one of the world’s most famous - and high Church - private schools; practiced Yoga as part of my University drama course - which was anchored in understanding indigenous rituality and its manifestation in modern theatre; and was shaken by quasi-mystical experiences reading Fritjof Capra’s The Tao of Physics, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Norman Mailer’s Ancient Evenings.
Capra’s book stood alone at the time as a popular introduction to the parallels between quantum physics and Eastern philosophy. Attempting to comprehend quantum theory in itself can simply induce an ineffable awe, knocking into oblivion our classical notions of space and time. And only later, much later, did I realize that the spell of Marquez’s most famous novel of magical realism lay in what for me is its central - but largely neglected - narrative of re-incarnation and the interconnectedness of all things. As for Mailer, it was again only much later that I suspected why this novel, set in ancient Egypt, might have pulled me so radically into another dimension - aged five years old, I had stood up and told a stunned teacher what it was like when I was inside the Great Pyramid.
So, my thirst for knowledge since our son’s death has represented a kind of return. Except that knowledge is now an aspiration to wisdom and, above all, to healing - in both its most human and its most divine sense. And perhaps if during my extended youth I made something of a name (as an author), and if in middle-age I made some money (as a consultant), it is time now to make, or at least attempt to make, some personal and societal amends.
For two careers I chased truth in the manner those careers demanded: Journalism (reporting for major UK and US publications and authoring two widely-reviewed books on Latin America); and Corporate Investigations (a senior managing director of a publicly-traded risk consulting firm).
These careers meant that I encountered suffering, conflict, and greed - first from the outside, as an observer, then from the inside, as a participant: transitioning from reporter to player - but still beholden to somebody else’s story built on who, what, when, why, and where.
Yet it was always about revelation. And it is now. This time, however, it is immeasurably more important. It is about healing. It is about helping people to become whole again, in body, mind, and spirit. It is about helping people beyond merely ameliorating physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. It is about helping people to reveal for themselves, to cathartically release, and to resolve the symptoms’ underlying causes. With the causes resolved, the symptoms vanish.
Having immersed myself in philosophy, experimental psychology, physics, and spirituality - while qualifying as a Yoga teacher (thank you Duke University MBA candidate Elgar Richards!), Reiki practitioner (thank you nurse educator Peggy Gaines, RN, BSN!) and Remote Viewer (thank you retired Army intelligence officer and veteran of the government's Star Gate 'psychic espionage' program Paul H. Smith!!) - I am now privileged to be your guide in this divine journey of self transformation.
